HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- Harrisonburg's city council took another step on Tuesday night toward considering Anicira's proposal to take the place of the Rockingham-Harrisonburg SPCA as the city's animal shelter.

The vote on Wednesday night was to accept Anicira's proposal at the conceptual stage, which means other organizations have 45 days to submit proposals and the public can contact the council with their opinions.

After sitting through a three hour meeting, Anicira's leaders were happy with the council's decision.

"So we came into tonight really hopeful, but unsure of what to expect, since city staff had recommended that no action be taken," said Anicira's community outreach coordinator Kelsey Cler. "So we are very excited and looking forward to the next steps in the 45-day process."

That 45 day process will start in a few days.

Anicira will present their reasons for wanting to become the city's shelter to council on August 8th.

The Rockingham-Harrisonburg SPCA will be presenting their side during the August 22nd city council meeting.
